Motivation by Inspiration or Necessity
Lance Armstrong
It’s an interesting thought to consider our motivations in the different areas of our lives I think. The most interesting part of someone else’s life, for me, is the fruit of their life - whether by inspiration or necessity.
I’ve just devoured two of Lance Armstrong’s books, “It’s Not About the Bike” and “Every Second Counts”. I find them to be an encouraging read, whilst emotional at times, but ultimately, incredibly uplifting and motivating. His life story is one of overcoming, against all odds, and in the face of almost unbelievable adversity. His most significant life struggles were born out of two very different roots.
Motivation by Inspiration
Firstly, he had the desire to compete as a professional cyclist. Whilst he saw some success in this arena early in his career, he enjoyed only limited success in the Tour de France in these early years; the conquering of which would later lead to his worldwide recognition as one of the greatest cyclists of all time. I see this desire to compete as born out of a dream, and heavily immersed in competitive inspiration. He had the desire to succeed in professional cycling, and chose to pit himself against all that this arena of competition would bring.
…or Necessity.
Secondly, he was faced later by the incredible threat to his life, becoming involved in his personal battle with testicular cancer. The cancer spread to both lungs, and by way of his blood stream, into his brain also. (I can’t do justice in this short space to describe to you his battle with the illness, which is why I would recommend you allow Lance to paint his own vivid picture for you, in both books.) In the illness, he was faced with the battle for his very life. This challenge was different. Whilst he chose to battle, and to stay alive, he did not choose cancer.
He ultimately overcame both illness, born of necessity and circumstance, and the Tour de France, born of Inspiration.
What are your motivations?
What are your motivations to succeed in life? Are they fuelled by adversity, and the necessity to overcome? Or are you driving to improve your circumstances, or to better yourself, born of inspiration?
What I find to be true is that we all require motivation to move from one season of our lives into the next season. But from where will we allow our motivation to be fed?
I encourage you to find the motivation to better yourself. Whether of necessity or circumstance, you must make it happen in your life. If things are dark at the moment, and oppressive, then think of the struggle’s Lance has overcome through necessity. If things are just too normal, then you must harness motivation born of inspiration, and purpose in yourself to move into the next season of your life…
