Choosing your Blogging Platform

WordPress.ORG or WordPress.COM

Being big Google fans, and celebrating the way in which Google has enhanced the way we work online, we regret to inform Google that we prefer another blogging platform… [Google, awesome Google, provide a free blogging service at Blogger.com if you'd like to check that out too!] It’s the WordPress blogging platform we use exclusively here at AddIncomeOnline.com.

So you may have come across Wordpress before, likely via one of two popular WordPress related sites. The first, and best where making money online is concerned, is Wordpress.ORG. The second, pipped at the post, being WordPress.COM. Let’s allow the guys at WordPress.COM to highlight some of the differences:

WordPress.Org

WordPress.org is open source blogging software that is freely available to anyone to download. The software must be downloaded and installed onto a computer. WordPress, being internet software, must be installed on a web server–that’s a computer that is set up to serve web pages over the internet–and your personal computer probably isn’t a web server. So, to make the free WordPress software work, you have to own a web server or rent some space on one…”

This is referred to as “Hosting”, which incurrs a minimal monthly fee. We’ll go on to reccomend some hosts who will allow you to install your WordPress blog on their servers, as not all hosts are compatible with the software. Also, we’ll recommend the hosts with the easiest installation of your new blog - let’s not make things more complicated than they already are ;o)

WordPress.Com

WordPress.com is different. It’s a web site that provides blogs hosted free of charge. The software on WordPress.com is very similar but not exactly the same software you can download from WordPress.org. It is a multi-user version of WordPress that allows many thousands of blogs to be hosted on a single web server. The free blog hosting does NOT come with the ability to upload plugins or themes. Because any change in the software affects every blog on the system.”

Many of the features available by way of hosting your own WordPress blog are UNAVAILABLE at WordPress.com. Whilst there is talk of making these features available, in a limited way, at WordPress.com, it’s likely that fees charged will be comparable to current Hosting costs; ie. There will be no benefit then, pricing or otherwise, over using the WordPress.Org option ;o)

In summary…?

So, in a nutshell… Would you like a blog to begin to use when making money from home? - Use WordPress. Should you use .ORG or .COM? - We say, use WordPress.Org every time!
